DATALOGGING INSTRUCTIONS
Datalogging is essentially making a “recording” of your vehicle while driving to ensure that your tune is fully optimized for your fuel quality and environmental conditions. Datalogging can sometimes show mechanical issues and faults that otherwise could go undetected. The base tune file that BMP sends is safe to drive without logging, but BMP recommends that every customer goes through the log process to ensure everything is running perfect. The log process is also the time to let BMP know if you want changes to things like throttle response, fan control, stop start behavior, and the like.
There are two ways to record a log. You can use your PC to make a log, or you can do standalone logging with your MPVI4.
LOGGING WITH YOUR PC
After plugging into your vehicle and opening VCM Scanner, click the blue car button to ‘connect to vehicle’, go to the Channels tab (on the left) and click the folder icon to open a channel configuration. Do not try to open this file outside of VCM Scanner. Open the configuration file I provided you via email. If you can’t find the file, you may download it here:
-After the configuration file is loaded in VCM Scanner, click ‘vehicle’ at the top menu, then click ‘Repoll for for Supported Parameters’. This will ensure all data I need gathered populates.
- If a bunch of channels are missing or you had BLANK boxes in VCM Editor when you did your read, see below for a workaround solution to get logging working.
-With the engine on, hit the red record button. While recording, go for a 5-10 minute drive, I need at least 1 wide open throttle pull, as well as mixed city driving. Drive with a variety of aggressiveness and use the whole range of the pedal and engine to get various loads and areas within the tune.
-When done recording, hit the blue square button to stop the recording.
- Save the log in VCM Scanner by clicking the “log File” menu up top and then selecting “Save Log File As”. You will then email me that saved log! It will be a .hpl format file, if it’s anything else, you did something wrong.
MISSING OS/BLANK OS DATALOG FIX
If when you did your stock tune “read” the boxes were blank and you had to manually select your ECU or TCU, this means your operating system is not fully defined by HP Tuners, rather than create a support ticket and wait for them to add support, we can modify your vehicle profile in VCM Scanner in order to get log channels to work. Do this by doing the following steps:
-Open VCM Scanner, make sure VCM Editor is closed.
-Click on "Vehicle" up at the top menu bar.
-Click "Vehicle Profiles" and then click "Vehicle Profile Editor"
-Click on your Jeep/vin
-To the right there is a black white box for "User OS." It should be blank. In that box I want you to type 68729562AA
-Exit out of that vehicle profile menu. No need to save, that OS number you just typed should stay in that box without saving. You can double back to verify that it stuck
-In the channels box to the left, click on the file folder, hovering over it should say “Recent Channel Configs”
-Click that and click "open channel config" and select the log configuration file sent in your email called “Jeep JL JT 3.6 Channels”.
-Go ahead and Connect To Vehicle with Jeep key turned on (blue vehicle button).
-Under the same "Vehicle" menu up top, now select "Repoll For Supported Parameters"
-Now your channels list should be black lettered and when you hit the record button, data should be there. You may have to click stop and press record again if some data is missing.
-Record and drive and send me the log as normal.
STANDALONE LOGGING WITHOUT A PC IN THE VEHICLE
Before taking a log with your MPVI remotely without your PC in the vehicle with you, you need to configure it in VCM Scanner for standalone datalogging. Initial setup will require you to be in the Jeep, but once setup is done, you can leave the PC at home and you won’t ever have to set it up again in the future.
-Open VCM Scanner at your PC with your MPVI4 plugged in while sitting in your Jeep.
-Connect the MPVI4 to the OBD2 port using the USB cable.
-Add my channel configuration file sent via email or available above in the “Downloads” section of this website. To do this, in the channels list to the left, click the yellow folder for “Recent Channel Configs” then click the top button for “Open Channel Config.” Go find the channel config download and click on that to apply the channels to VCM Scanner.
-Turn your Jeep on and click the blue car for “Connect to Vehicle” button up top.
-Go to the top menu and click “Vehicle” and then click “Repoll for supported parameters.”
-You can shut the Jeep off now and disconnect from the vehicle in VCM Scanner and from the OBD2 port itself.
- At the top menu, click “Vehicle” and the “MPVI4 Features”.
-In the “Channels Configs” tab, click “Upload Vehicle Specific” and select the VIN that pops up, it may not be your VIN number, but it’ll be the right channels if you followed these instructions.
-Now go to the “Start/Stop Triggers” tab.
-Click the “Always” button under defaults.
-Make sure the boxes for “Short button press” are selected for both Start Triggers and Stop Triggers.
-Click “Send triggers settings to interface”
-Now you are ready for datalogging without your PC in the vehicle. Plug your MPVI4 into the OBD2 port without the PC or cable and go for a drive. When ready to record the engine, simply press the button on the front of the MPVI4. You’ll know it’s recording with the status light changes from green to a different color. When done recording, simply short press that same button again and it will save the recording on the device.
-Back at your PC, plug your MPVI4 in and retrieve the saved recording from the device by going back into the “MPVI4 Features” menu.
-Click the “Log Files” tab and you should see your recording in the list, select it and click “Read selected”.
-Now your log will pull up in VCM Scanner. Exit out of the “MPVI4 Features” menu and save the log in VCM Scanner by clicking the “log File” menu up top and then selecting “Save Log File As”. You will then email me that saved log! It will be a .hpl format file, if it’s anything else, you did something wrong.
